Roman "Maintz" Gladius The gladius is known as "the sword that conquered the world." Most early versions of the Roman short sword were wasp-waisted, to improve balance, and possessed a long point, two features which combined to provide both cutting power and stabbing ability in one handy weapon. Later versions, such as the "Pompeii" pattern, were not waisted and had shorter points, but were just as effective (as well as being easier to make). Both swords served side-by-side for many years and it was not uncommon to find 4th-century Legionnaires carrying either design. It features a full-tang construction, hand-forged high-carbon steel blade, and a contoured hardwood handle. Highly-polished steel spacers are placed at the bottom of the handle, to add strength and durability. A leather scabbard is included. Blade length: 21" ¤ Overall: 29-1/4" ¤ Weight: 2-1/2 lbs.
