How long will it take to receive my order?
All in-stock items are normally shipped within 48 hours from the date of receipt of your order. However, we usually only ship on Tuesday through Friday. In the occasion that we are out of stock on an item and will not be shipping within 3 days, we will notify you and give you the opportunity to cancel the order. Regular UPS Ground delivery takes 7 to 10 business days. International orders can take 2-4 weeks (contact us about faster international shipping, if 2-4 weeks isn't quick enough).

International customers: sometimes packages may be delayed by international customs. Unfortunately, this is beyond our control. If you have any specific instructions for us to help your packages clear customs more quickly, please include them in the "Special Instructions" field on our order form.
I didn't receive a confirmation of my order. Did it go through?
In all likelihood, yes. If you saw the receipt page, then it's gone through just fine. Our shopping cart system occasionally forgets to send out the confirmation e-mails, but your order has been received and will be processed as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience!

You are, of course, welcome to contact us to check on your order submission!
What if I do not have a credit card?
No problem! Simply print out an order form (Domestic Form || International Form) and mail it to us at the address below. Include a money order or banker's check (no personal checks, please!) for the total amount of the products and the shipping charges. Please do not send cash!

If you're unsure about the total amount of your order, get in touch with us and we'll be happy to help!
What is a backorder?
"Backorder" means that we didn't have that particular item in stock when you ordered it, and it might take some time before we're able to get it to you. The item is usually shipped to you within 30 days, and are not charged to your credit card until shipped. Backorders are always shipped first, in the order they were received. You will receive an e-mail or call if any items are on backorder or if there are any other problems with processing your order.
What are your shipping methods and costs?
If your order is shipping to an address within the continental United States, it will generally ship via UPS, which allows us to track your package (we will e-mail your tracking number to you when your order ships). Occasionally, when an item is out of stock, we will have the manufacturer ship that item directly to you; in these cases, we will do our best to provide you with any tracking information that is available for that shipment.

If you will require expedited shipping, please contact us. There are many options available to guarantee a quicker delivery of your order. Please note that the expedited shipping costs listed on the table below are estimates; orders containing items which are large, bulky, or heavy can and do incur higher costs.

Shipping costs to destinations within the continental United States are determined according to this table:
Shipping and Handling

Please add...
$0 to $25
$8.95
$26 to $50
$10.95

$22.95

Shipments to anywhere else in the world go via United States Post Office Priority Mail. Please note that the $30.95 cost for international shipping is included as an estimate only; smaller packages will generally require a smaller charge, while larger and bulkier packages will usually cost more. We will contact you prior to shipping your order so that you can approve the final shipping cost.

The USPS' tracking system doesn't appear to update very frequently, but we will nonetheless provide you with the tracking number for your shipment.

For international customers interested in receiving their orders more quickly, expedited shipping options do exist. Let us know if you'd like to get something more quickly, but be warned that fast shipping can be extremely expensive!
What is your return policy? How can I return an item?
We have a thirty-day, money-back guarantee, which means you have thirty days from the shipment date of your order to decide if you're satisfied. If not, contact us and we will arrange to return your product for a full refund, store credit, or an exchange for a different item. Please note that unless a product is defective, we cannot be responsible for any shipping charges!

Except in the case of defective items, exchanges are shipped after the item to be exchanged has arrived at our store.

Returns must be in new or as-sold condition and accompanied by any paperwork, accessories, and packaging originally sold with the item. If the item has been worn, damaged, or altered in any way, we cannot accept it. (When trying on boots, please do not wear them outside!) If any accessories are missing from the item when we receive it, your return will be assessed a restocking fee of up to 25%. If your item has been worn, altered, damaged, or is otherwise ineligible for return, it will be shipped back to you at your expense. If you're not sure if an item can be returned, please ask!

If thirty days have passed since the shipment date but you would still like to return an item, you are welcome to contact us to discuss it. Please be aware, however, that we cannot refund your payment after the thirty days have passed; returns accepted after this period will be for store credit or exchange only.

We recommend you insure your return for its full purchase price; very rarely, packages can be lost in transit and there is unfortunately nothing we can do in those cases!

If possible, include your invoice (or a copy thereof) with your shipment. If we can't identify it as yours, we won't be able to process your return.
Please make sure to contact us prior to shipping any return! (It's somewhat disconcerting when a mystery package arrives at our doorstep!)
Do you have a store? What are your hours there?
Absolutely! Our store is located in Haverhill, MA, just about forty minutes north of Boston. We're open Tuesday through Saturday from 12pm-6pm. For directions and other details, click here.
What if I have a problem with my order? Or if I need to cancel it?
Please contact our Customer Service Department at customerservice@silvermane.com or call (800) 332-5421. We will be more than happy to assist you!

If you will need to cancel an order, please do so at your earliest convenience. If your order has already been shipped to you, it can't be canceled!
Caring For Steel Weaponry
If you purchase a high-carbon steel, battle-ready article from us, it will arrive coated in a protective layer of grease or oil. This is necessary to keep blades and any other steel parts from corroding. All high- and mild-carbon steel equipment should be stored in a dry place and kept oiled or greased for moisture resistance. Any light oil will work, such as a machine or gun oil; WD40 is acceptable in very low-moisture environments, but must be re-applied each time the article is handled. We do not recommend using vegetable or other cooking oils, as they will become rancid over time. Do not leave carbon steel items inside leather scabbards or sheaths, as these will draw moisture in from the air and rust your weapon in a very short time.

We carry a line of maintenance items for your steel equipment, including specially-formulated protective oil, a premium metal polish (suitable for all metals), and even a non-chemical, non-messy tool for removing rust and light corrosion!
Caring For Steel Mail Armor
Your high-carbon steel mail shirt or coif will come to you with a heavy coat of oil on it. The easiest way to remove this oil is by dipping it in (or allowing it to soak in) lacquer thinner. Once the oil is removed, moisture in the air and perspiration will cause rust to form. Unless you intend for your mail to appear rusty, we recommend keeping it oiled at all times. You may wish to spray a clear silicone coat on the mail to slow rusting or apply a clear lacquer to protect it further. Note that steel mail which has been galvanized, anodized, or coated with a non-corrosive outer layer (such as zinc) will not need to be oiled or treated; simply wipe it down with a clean cloth after each wear. Brass or bronze mail should be kept clean with a commercial brass cleaner; aluminum mail is naturally corrosion-resistant.

The best way to remove light rust is to put the mail piece into a sack or pillowcase with fine sand* and shake it vigorously until the rust is removed; if possible, do this every time you wear your mail to help prevent corrosion.

*Historically, squires would put their masters' mail in barrels half-filled with sand and roll the barrels down a hill!
Using Your Weapon(s)
Many of our swords and daggers will stand up to swordplay, both stage combat and reenactments; these weapons will be noted as "battle-ready" or "battle-worthy". If you have any questions as to whether a particular weapon is intended to be sufficient for combat use, please ask us! (As a rule of thumb, any weapon made of stainless steel or marked on our website as "Decorative" or "Costume" pieces are not strong enough to withstand the rigors of re-enactment use.)

(This bears repeating: if your weapon is constructed of stainless steel, it is designed to hang on a wall or on your belt; it should never be struck against an object or used for any kind of combative purpose. Yes, steel is a very hard metal, but the stainless grades used in most swords will not withstand the shock of being struck; further, the tang and furniture [all the parts that aren't the blade] are susceptible to damage and breakage because they are simply not designed for that purpose. You have been warned!)

This does not mean that the blades are indestructible! No matter what the claim, any blade can be damaged in use. Our battle-ready weapons are well-tempered and hard enough to take a very good edge, yet soft enough to retain a good spring action.

You may have heard about "Rockwell hardness" or "Rockwell rating." Many modern companies give a Rockwell hardness figure for their products; the general concept is "the harder the better." This can be erroneous, however, especially for sword blades as Rockwell hardness is meant to measure tool hardness and not blades. In a tool the Rockwell hardness of the working surface is usually a small section of the tool, such as a hammer's strike face. Over a longer surface, the Rockwell rating will vary 3°-5° along the length of the blade. A blade with a high Rockwell number will be difficult to sharpen and be prone to simply shattering when struck, while one that is too soft (or untempered) will bend and, if sharpened, will not hold an edge. With that in mind, our blades will average RC 50 - hard enough to take and hold a good edge, but not so hard that they do not spring properly when struck.

When using your sword for swordplay, we cannot stress enough that you must wear proper protection. Remember that historical fighters would armor themselves as much as they could! Even an unsharpened sword can cause serious injury and - if caution is not used - easily break bone. In fighting blade-on-blade, your opponent's blade should be parried with the side of your blade. Edge-to-edge sword blows will nick both weapons, no matter what the steel or temper. Also, slapping with the side of the blade should be avoided, as a very hard slap can break the blade. These simple truths go for not just our weapons, but for any sword that was ever made and no doubt for any sword that ever will be made.
