How long will it take to receive my order?

All in-stock items are normally shipped within 48 hours from the date of receipt of your order. However, we usually only ship on Tuesday through Friday (for Monday shipping, see Priority Processing). In the occasion that we are out of stock on an item and will not be shipping within 3 days, we will notify you and give you the opportunity to cancel the order. Regular Ground delivery takes 7 to 10 business days. International orders can take 2-4 weeks (contact us about faster international shipping, if 2-4 weeks isn't quick enough).

International customers: sometimes packages may be delayed by international customs. This is unfortunately beyond our control. If you have any specific instructions for us to help your packages clear customs more quickly, please include them in the "Special Instructions" field on our order form.

I didn't receive a confirmation of my order. Did it go through?
In all likelihood, yes. You're certainly welcome to call or email us and make sure, but our current order system doesn't provide an automated confirmation. Sorry about that!

What if I do not have a credit card?
No problem! You can mail a bank check (no personal checks!) or a money order drawn in U.S. funds, with a list of item numbers and include the shipping and handling charges to:

Silvermane
45 Talmuth Ave.
Haverhill, MA 01830

Make checks payable to Silvermane. We cannot accept two-party or counter checks. Please note, however, that we do not accept checks at our retail store (only for online or mail orders). Returned checks will incur a $25 service charge.

What is a backorder?
"Backorder" means that we didn't have that particular item in stock when you ordered it, and it might take some time before we're able to get it to you. The item is usually shipped to you within 30 days, and are not charged to your credit card until shipped. Backorders are always shipped first, in the order they were received. You will receive an e-mail or call if any items are on backorder or if there are any problems with processing your order.

What are your shipping methods?
If your order is shipping to an address within the continental United States, it will ship via UPS, which allows us to track your package (and if you elect to provide us with an email address at the time of your order, we can email your tracking number to you when we ship). Shipments to anywhere else in the world go via United States Post Office Parcel Post, which unfortunately does not have a tracking system in place.

If you will need expedited shipping, please contact us! We have many options available to shorten shipping times, but you must contact us before your order ships in order to guarantee that we will be able to expedite a particular order.

A side note regarding international orders: we will contact you prior to shipment for approval of the shipping charges.

Care for Battle-Ready Equipment
If you purchase a high-carbon steel, battle-ready article from us, it will arrive coated in a protective layer of grease or oil. This is necessary to keep blades and any other steel part from corroding. All high- and mild-carbon steel equipment should be stored in a dry place and kept oiled or greased for moisture resistance. Any light oil will work, such as a machine or gun oil; WD40 is acceptable in very low-moisture environments, but must be re-applied each time the article is handled. We do not recommend using vegetable or other cooking oils, as they will become rancid over time.

Caring For Steel Mail Armor
Your high-carbon steel mail shirt or coif will come to you with a heavy coat of oil on it. The easiest way to remove this oil is by dipping it in (or allowing it to soak in) lacquer thinner. Once the oil is removed, moisture in the air and perspiration will cause rust to form. Unless you intend for your mail to appear rusty, we recommend keeping it oiled at all times. You may wish to spray a clear silicone coat on the mail to slow rusting or apply a clear lacquer to protect it further. Note that steel mail which has been galvanized, anodized, or coated with a non-corrosive outer layer (such as zinc) will not need to be oiled or treated; simply wipe it down with a clean cloth after each wear. Brass or bronze mail should be kept clean with a commercial brass cleaner; aluminum mail is naturally corrosion-resistant.

The best way to remove light rust is to put the mail piece into a sack or pillowcase with fine sand* and shake it vigorously until the rust is removed; if possible, do this every time you wear your mail to help prevent corrosion.

*Historically, squires would put their masters' mail in barrels half-filled with sand and roll the barrels down a hill!

Using Your Weapon
Many of our swords and daggers will stand up to swordplay, both stage combat and reenactments; these weapons will be noted as "battle-ready" or "battle-worthy". If you have any questions as to whether a particular weapon is intended to be sufficient for combat use, please ask us! (As a rule of thumb, any weapon made of stainless steel or marked on our website as "Decorative" or "Costume" pieces are not strong enough to withstand the rigors of re-enactment use. )

This does not mean that the blades are indestructible. No matter what the claim, any blade can be damaged in use. Our battle-ready weapons are well-tempered and hard enough to take a very good edge yet soft enough to retain a good spring action.

You may have heard about "Rockwell hardness" or "Rockwell rating." Many modern companies give a Rockwell hardness figure for their products; the general concept is "the harder the better." This can be erroneous, however, especially for sword blades as Rockwell hardness is meant to measure tool hardness and not blades. In a tool the Rockwell hardness of the working surface is usually a small section of the tool, such as a hammer's strike face. Over a longer surface, the Rockwell rating will vary 3°-5° along the length of the blade. A blade with a high Rockwell number will be difficult to sharpen and be prone to simply shattering when struck, while one that is too soft (or untempered) will bend and, if sharpened, will not hold an edge. With that in mind, our blades will average RC 50 - hard enough to take and hold a good edge, but not so hard that they do not spring properly when struck.

When using your sword for swordplay, we cannot stress enough that you must wear proper protection. Remember that historical fighters would armor themselves as much as they could! Even an unsharpened sword can cause serious injury and - if caution is not used - easily break bone. In fighting blade-on-blade, your opponent's blade should be parried with the side of your blade. Edge-to-edge sword blows will nick both weapons, no matter what the steel or temper. Also, slapping with the side of the blade should be avoided, as a very hard slap can break the blade. These simple truths go for not just our weapons, but for any sword that was ever made and no doubt for any sword that ever will be made.
