Gambesons & Arming Doublets A gambeson is worn under a suit of mail to provide cushioning and extra protection. We have both light weight and Battle Ready Heavy Duck Cloth gambesons and arming jackets.	Tabards and Surcoats One man in armor looks pretty much like any other man in armor when you're in the heat and confusion of the battlefield, so men-at-arms and knights would wear surcoats over their armor to help distinguish them from opposing forces and to show devotion to their lords. A tabard served much the same purpose in civilian life, allowing a person to show his allegiance to a particular cause or character.
