Mail lengths are combined in the "international" pattern - four links going through a fifth - common to all European mail. 16ga. high-carbon steel rings are galvanized for rust resistance. Circa 300 B.C. - 1700 A.D. Shirt hangs to mid-thigh on most warriors; sleeves are three-quarter length. Fits chests to 54"; weighs approximately 25 lbs.

It was possible to drive the point of a weapon through the rings of a mail shirt or shear it with a good cut. This often drove the damaged rings deep into the wound. Even if the blow didn't cut the mail, the blunt trauma alone was enough to break bone and damage internal organs. It was soon found that a thick, padded garment worn under a mail shirt greatly reduced the risk of these types of injuries. Our gambeson is of a type worn from the early Middle Ages well on through the Renaissance. Hangs approx. 32" (mid-thigh on most warriors) and weighs 1 1/2 lbs.
