Our image of dragonfly’s and dandelion seed heads is based on the Art Nouveau lithography work of Maurice Pillard Verneuil. As an artist, Verneuil was interested in themes related to the natural world and designed, in elaborate patterns, images of insects, birds, plants, animals and sea creatures.

Working during the Art Nouveau period, and influenced by William Morris, he applied his vision to wallpaper, textiles, stained glass and ceramics to wonderful effect. Although he was not well recognized in his own time, his work is very popular today.

A life long love of all things mythic, he traveled in Iceland in 1865 to study myths and traditions that later inspired artistic and literary achievements such as the founding of Kelmscott Press. His design work is credited with inspiring both the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. Our M29 image is based on a William Morris tapestry design depicting the leaves of the Acanthus plant.
